Sample of Grade Six Term One

Each LBC Teaching Guide contains:

Grade Six Resource CD loaded with helpful articles, maps, printable materials and templates to use with the curriculum. Each CD contains a year’s worth of Picture Study (see below).

• Term-by-term overview of each subject so you can plan ahead.

• Week-by-week schedule that details how to use the literature to teach each subject.

• Planning for Learning™—Flexible method of scheduling using the trademark LBC "Planning for Learning" method, which uses 36-week school year, divided into four terms or eight weeks. The 9th week of each term is a flex week in which there is no new instruction but rather a time to assess your child’s learning through end-of-term narration questions, provided for each subject area. These narration questions are similar to those used in Charlotte Mason’s syllabi.

Grade Six Teaching Guide covers:

Christian studies—Scripture, Heroes of the Faith, and practical work (according to CM guidelines).
Language Arts—poetry, 18th & 19th century poets; storytelling, folktales and Bible stories; dictation, taken from readings in history and science; recitation; copywork.
Geography—Around the World in 80 Days, also map work focuses on the places and events mentioned in the histories, science and geography literature.
Science—uses the incomparable Story Book of Science, by Jean Henri Fabre to cover biology, technology, botany, astronomy, weather and chemistry. Study of chemistry follows.
Nature Study—regular work in child’s Nature Journal. Using the Handbook of Nature Study, the areas of focus for each term are: 1) ants, wasps, bees; 2) mammals (wild); 3) indoor plants; 4) reptiles.
Picture Study—Rembrandt, Cassatt, Van Gogh, Turner. Grade Six Resource CD contains all the pictures needed for study.
World History—the eras of study are Enlightenment to the Modern Age (1700s to 1960s), with focus on Britain’s rise to power and her role in colonization of Africa, Asia and India.
American History—the era of study is 20th century, addressing major events such as WW I, Great Depression, WWII and the Civil Rights Movement.
