I don't know if anyone will find this useful, but in Week 5, World History, the Teaching Guide lists a website with directions for building a model longship using card stock. There is a typo in the URL, and the correct site is: http://www.ncte.ie/viking/model.htm

Melissa

I just ordered the First Grade set for my son. (SO excited!) I was looking through the teaching methods tonight and saw that it is recommended to combine children that are close in age into one set. I love this idea since my children are all 2 years apart (6, 4, 2 and one due on Sunday). Next year my son would be using the Second Grade curriculum, while my daughter would be ready for Foundation Year. My feeling is that it's probably important for my daughter to do the Foundation Year before I combine her with her brother. Am I right in this thinking?

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but I'm just trying to wrap my head around how this would work. If the above is correct, I would be combining them in the Third Grade set for my son's 3rd grade year and my daughter's 1st grade year. At what point, then, would my daughter go back to pick up Grades One and Two? Further, could my younger daughter also join them at some point, or would she be too far behind her brother for that?

I guess another good question, while I'm at it, would be: At what level are students expected to be doing most of their work independently?

I just posted in the Introductions section earlier today, and now I have a question. My stomach is in knots because my husband and I just spent a few hundred dollars purchasing another curriculum for our 6 and 4 year olds, and after looking into Living Books more I'm having buyer's remorse. I really think my son would find this curriculum more fun and interesting. At first I thought we'd just get through this year and order this curriculum next year for 2nd grade, but when I compared the book list with what our local library carries, I see that I can get a lot of the books that way. So now I'm seriously considering selling what we just started and purchasing LBC instead.

My question is, can anyone tell me which books in the 1st grade list are used for extended periods and which are used only briefly?

I will be teaching the following this year:

5th grade girl - excellent reader, needs work on writing skills.

3rd grade boy - struggling reader, but picking up steam

6yo boy - if in PS would be in 1st, but I would like to keep him at K, I think so he graduates later. Typical Wiggly Willie to the extreme. My main goals for him this year are teaching him to read and math, but hate for him to miss out on other stuff, too.

Toddler and Baby are around to keep me even busier!!

Thanks for your help in deciding what would be best.

Jesse

I would like to get some insight on the Spelling Program that Living Books implements. When and how will spelling be implemented? My daughter is advanced with her reading. We are currently starting First Grade. I am not sure whether to add this year or wait. I would also like to know the format that is used to teach spelling and what grade it begins. Thank you for any input.
