I would like to get some insight on the Spelling Program that Living Books implements. When and how  will spelling be implemented? My daughter is advanced with her reading.  We are currently starting First Grade. I am not sure whether to add this year or wait. I would also like to know the format that is used to teach spelling and what grade it begins. Thank you for any input.

Hi Cherie,

I see that no one has replied to your question, sorry!
I have a dd doing Grade 1 (currently in term 2) and she has really taken off with her reading. I just wanted to say that we don't follow the LA part too much from the TM instead do buddy reading together. I think spelling comes at a later age in Charlotte Mason's method. I am hoping mums with more knowledge and experience than me would chime in here.
If not, I wanted to suggest you email the Carrolls about your question - they often reply promptly to my emails

all the best,
Rosemary

It's a pretty gentle approach to spelling that I have noticed.  The teacher's manual has spelling in our third grade TM but not the 1st or 2nd.  I believe spelling is discussd in the Ruth Beechick book "the 3 R's".  Up until 3rd grade it is spelling as needed.  I've always done it with my son though on our own, as that's how he learned best how to read and recognize words.  Each child is different, so I would say, if they need the extra practice, go ahead and do spelling on your own.  It could just be lists (5-10 words) each week that they need to learn to mastery.  You could choose days of the week, colors, "number words" like one, two, etc.  But honestly, most of that will be covered in phonics and possibly math and learning to read, so I wouldn't really do extra unless your child is really struggling.
